Famous Cities of the World: Istanbul

Istanbul is a province designed to be the capital and it has been the capital of three empires which used to dominate the world. Today the province houses the precious remains of these civilizations and stands with all its glamour and mysticism as a harmonious link between East and West, past and present, antique and modern. Istanbul is the commercial and cultural centre of Turkey; therefore, there are restaurants of many nationalities such as Korean, Russian, Italian, and Chinese. American-style fast-food outlets are becoming more popular but for a quick snack it is more appropriate to fill up at the plethora of tiny take away with kebabs and snacks. Istanbul is a city alive with so much to offer in terms of history, culture and entertainment. Like the rings on a tree, each layer yearns to be examined, to reveal its own personal history.

Istanbul is a safe city, especially when compared to cities of similar size (approximate population: 10 million). Public transportation and taxi cabs are easily accessible, safe, and inexpensive. Istanbul is at its glimmering best in the sunny summer months. In fact, summer is so reliable that by the end of May restaurateurs are confidently wheeling out perishable furniture onto terraces and decks, safe in the knowledge that rain is very unlikely until the end of September. Today Istanbul is the capital of unique and special gay culture of Turkey.

Istanbul is truly a world city, a city which everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It is an enchanting blend of Eastern and Western culture, a vibrant, modern city, with a unique identity. Istanbul is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural, and economic centre. It is located on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.

Istanbul is connected to Europe and the rest of Turkey with highways and railroads. The bridges crossing the Bosporus are among the longest highway suspension bridges in the world. Istanbul is an international art and cultural center. The International Arts and Cultural Festival are held each year in June and July with famous artists coming from all over the world. Istanbul is a city where the future, in some sense, could always be read. When Rome was the site of imperial power, Istanbul would become the next seat of the Roman Empire.

Istanbul is a unique and unforgettable sight with its towers and its palaces and the numerous domes and minarets of the 35 large and over a hundred smaller mosques rising above the water. Little is left of the colorful Oriental life of the old capital of the Sultans, and the people now wear European dress. Istanbul is home to a layering of civilization on civilization, of empire built on empire. It's as momentous as Rome, as captivating as Paris, and as exotic as Bangkok (this last is potentially a bad thing). Istanbul is one of the oldest cities in the world, situated on the shores of the Bosphorus straight. This straight divides, and connects the two continents of Europe and Asia, as well as joining the Black and the Marmara Sea.
